The Mojaloop Foundation recently welcomed The Interledger Foundation (ILF) as our newest Sponsor Member. Like the Mojaloop Foundation, ILF is focused on increasing financial inclusion and will be working with the community to help advance our mission of enabling digital financial services for all. To learn more about the organization and its involvement with Mojaloop, we sat down with Briana Marbury, CEO of the Interledger Foundation.

Q: Please introduce yourself and your organization.

The Interledger Foundation is a philanthropic nonprofit committed to expanding digital financial inclusion to vulnerable populations. The Interledger Protocol (ILP) is an open protocol currency network for sending payments in multiple currencies across ledgers. It routes packets of money across networks in the same way that the internet routes packets of information. In this way, the ILP can connect all types of ledgers, from digital wallets to national payment systems and beyond. The goal is to enable easy transactions with anyone, no matter location, network or currency.

ILF’s mission is to develop, support, and steward community and technical infrastructure for the ILP and related technologies. ILF invests in organizations, communities, and entrepreneurs working towards the shared goal of enabling interoperable and frictionless payments across the globe. Our vision is to make sending money as easy as sending an email, which we believe will go a long way toward addressing financial inclusion challenges.

Q: Why is the Mojaloop Foundation’s mission of financial inclusion important to your organization?

The Mojaloop Foundation and Interledger Foundation have the shared vision of increasing digital financial services access for the underrepresented voices that need it most. We believe the technological capabilities of the Interledger Protocol – to enable users to easily send payments across any networks without costly fees – is critical to help close the financial inclusion gap for the more than one billion people worldwide who remain unbanked.

Q: What excites you about joining the Mojaloop Foundation?

We’re looking forward to becoming more involved with the engaged and dynamic Mojaloop community and are excited about the partnership opportunities that are integral to moving the needle on this imperative undertaking. The Mojaloop platform will utilize the Interledger Protocol to enable secure money transfers, so membership and the close alignment that comes with it was a natural next step. We believe partnerships with like-minded organizations are critical to the success of achieving our respective missions, so we are thrilled to become an even more active contributor to the Mojaloop community.

Q: What will the Interledger Foundation contribute to the Mojaloop community?

We will contribute our time, industry insights, and engineering resources to the Mojaloop community. We look forward to working with other members of the community to help drive Mojaloop’s advancement and help increase financial inclusion the world over.
