The Mojaloop Foundation is excited to announce the release of Mojaloop v17.0.0 Irrawaddy, marking one of the most significant updates since the platform’s inception. Over the past months, both functional and technical enhancements have strengthened Mojaloop’s capabilities, making it more scalable, resilient, and interoperable — ultimately enabling faster, more secure, and streamlined implementation of inclusive instant payment systems.

When asked about the significance of v17, Paula Hunter, executive director of the Mojaloop Foundation, said: “With v17, Mojaloop strengthens its role as a foundational platform for both domestic and cross border payments. These enhancements pave the way for more seamless transactions across regions, ultimately helping businesses and individuals participate more fully in the digital economy.”

Expanding Beyond Domestic Payments

With v17, Mojaloop is no longer just a foundation for domestic instant payment systems. It now enables cross border instant payments. With support for currency conversion and inter-scheme capabilities, Mojaloop now facilitates seamless interoperability between different Mojaloop deployments. This allows hub operators to establish regional payment networks, ultimately supporting cross border trade and opening new business and economic opportunities.

Advancing ISO 20022 Adoption

ISO 20022 has become the global standard for payments, with the objective of creating a more seamlessly connected and interoperable financial services industry. As part of this effort, Mojaloop v17 now processes ISO 20022 based messages while continuing to support for Mojaloop’s native FSPIOP APIs.

In collaboration with the ISO 20022 Payments Committee, Mojaloop has also introduced new message fields and types that are appropriate for inclusive instant payments systems, including a new standard for the agreement of terms phase. These enhancements significantly improve payment certainty and success rates — two critical factors for driving digital payment adoption, lowering costs and so advancing financial inclusion. These updates are part of Mojaloop v17 and will be available on the ISO 20022 website in the coming months.

Hardening Security and Strengthening Reliability

From a technical standpoint, this release prioritizes security, stability, reliability, and resilience. To further enhance system integrity, v17 introduces a software bill of materials (SBOM), cataloguing all external software dependencies to identify outdated or deprecated components, mitigating the risk of attacks through external vulnerabilities.

Achieving Industry Standard Performance

Mojaloop deployments have now been proven to operate at 1,000 transactions per second (TPS) and higher, aligning with global industry benchmarks. Upcoming stress tests will evaluate the system’s capacity for extreme transaction volumes and inform future scalability improvements. This will also be supplemented by forthcoming advances in the core ledger technologies at the heart of Mojaloop through the adoption of TigerBeetle.

A Collective Achievement

This milestone would not have been possible without the dedication of our contributors. We extend our gratitude to all the individual contributors involved but notably INFITX, ThitsaWorks, WiredIn, Paysys, iZayne, iMoSyS whose expertise and commitment made this release a reality.

What’s Next?

Mojaloop continues to evolve. The next major enhancement will include TigerBeetle integration, delivering unprecedented performance improvements to the Mojaloop core and next generation settlement processing.
